Westglen School (http://westglen.epsb.ca/home/) is the elementary school within the Edmonton Public School Board that serves the neighbourhood of Westmount. Westglen is a strong, vibrant, community school committed to ensuring all students experience academic success and personal growth. All Kindergarten to Grade 6 students receive daily physical education (including weekly dance instruction), and Westglen offers fine arts programs that involve guest teachers and artists in residence. Beginning in Grade 4, students receive instruction in French as a Second Language. All Grade 6 students are enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program, which is designed to help students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world. The school cultivates strong relationships between staff, students, families and the community, and is a community hub at the heart of Westmount.
The Westglen Parent Association (WPA) (www.westglenpa.com) raises funds to support and enhance student learning at Westglen School in consultation with the school administration and school council. For the 2018-2019 school year, the WPA is prioritizing fundraising for the Playspace Project. This two-part project includes:
1. Re-development of the Division II (grades 4-6) playground on the northwest side of the school: Westglen School is growing – for the first time ever the school has two full classes in each grade of Division II – and the space will be developed to better accommodate the expanding student population. The space will be designed for children ages 9 and up, offering them a more challenging and engaging play environment than what our school and neighbourhood currently offer.
2. Creation of an outdoor learning space to be used by all grade levels: this space will provide opportunities for students to learn about their environment, and support teachers in moving learning outside.
